Chapter Fifteen

It wasn’t like I didn’t recognize the whiff of danger in the air, because I caught the scent and it was acrid. Our dispute had gone from disagreement to argument to downright, good old antagonism. Did I ever expect it would turn into a blood feud?

I don’t know the definitive moment when it did, but it happened.

“What did you do?”

“Wheatley and I had a discussion about my barn. It might have involved my fists after he said something about you I didn’t like.”

I remembered I just looked at my father and wondered if that violence would be the end of it.

It wasn’t.

Doreen walked over and set down a piece of paper on his desk. “You’re a popular man.”

Chris glanced up, but she just shook her head. “Don’t ask me. I just took the message. He’s persistent, I’ll give him that.”

He’d just gotten back from interviewing a suspect in a fraud case and was hardly in the mood for more drama. Reluctantly, he read the note.

They were aware of each other.

“This is the entire message?”

“Yep, honey.”

“Same guy?”

Doreen raised a hand. “I think so. He asked me, by name, to deliver it to you.”

“That was it?”

“Yep. His exact words were: ‘Miss Doreen, tell Bailey this.’ And then I wrote them down. This job gets a little weird now and then.”

When she walked away, he sat there and stared at it, annoyed and restless. She was right. This cryptic shit was such a waste of his time . . .

Or was it?

Engaging the enemy? Maybe. The point of this escaped him. Who was aware of whom?

This game was wearing thin, since he had no idea of what this person wanted from him.

He sat there and thought about it. Disturbingly, he came up with a theory he didn’t like at all.

An impossible challenge? No motive, no evidence, no reason at all it would happen? Good luck.

Except there could be a curious purpose to this.

He needed to think. He texted Anna one word. Cabin.

She got it, which was insightful. Need to think?

I do.

I can watch the moppet.

It surprised him, but he didn’t want his usual solitude, so he called her. “You’re invited to go with me, if you’d like.”

The cabin was quaint, if nothing else. Maybe the word worn applied, or even dilapidated, but it was a very quiet setting. “Me and the moppet will pick you up.”

“Sounds like a nice evening. I’ll meet you at your house, if you like.”

It was true; it did sound like just what he needed. So he wrapped up one last document that needed to be filed and headed home.

True to her word, Anna was already there, the moppet on a leash, a bag in hand.

She didn’t ask any questions until they were in the truck and underway. “What’s up?”

“I don’t know. That’s the problem.”

“I haven’t heard that before. How are you going to figure it out?”

“Sitting on the deck, looking at the river, and drinking beer might give me some clarity.”

“I suppose that would be a relaxing venue to contemplate .
